Galantamine (Nivalin, Razadyne, Razadyne ER, Reminyl, Lycoremine) is used for the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease and various other memory impairments, particularly those of vascular origin. It is an alkaloid that is obtained synthetically or from the bulbs and flowers of Galanthus Caucasicus (Caucasian snowdrop, Voronov’s snowdrop), Galanthus woronowii (Amaryllidaceae) and related genera like Narcissus (daffodil)), Leucojum(snowflake) and Lycoris including Lycoris radiata (Red Spider Lily).
Galanthamine is natural extracted from lycoris radiate,is a tertiary alkaloid derived from snow drop and closely related species. It acts as a reversible competitive acetylcholinesterase (ACHE) inhibitor, while acts weaker on butyrylcholinesterse(BuChE).it is used in the treatment of disorders of the central nerbous system and may be used as an antidote to nonpolarizing muscle relaxants.Galanthamine hydrobromide is a white to almost white powder; sparingly soluble in water; insoluble chloroform,ether and alcohol.

Applications

1. Treatment for Alzheimer's disease (senile dementia):

It can help improve patients' memory, cognitive functions and daily living abilities.

2. Treatment for post-polio sequelae:

In early medical applications, it was used to alleviate the muscle weakness and paralysis symptoms caused by poliomyelitis (polio).

3. Awakening after anesthesia:

It can act as an antagonist of anesthetic drugs and be used to reverse the muscle relaxation caused by non-depolarizing muscle relaxants, helping patients recover breathing and consciousness after surgery.

4. Other neurological diseases:

It has also been studied for the treatment of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (otolithitis) and other cognitive impairments.
