Wattle, perennial herb. Creeping roots, black or dark brown. Stem upright above ground, type 2. The vegetative stem arises after the spore stem has withered and is 15-60cm tall with 6-15 ridges. Leaves degenerate, lower part of the union into a sheath, sheath teeth lanceolate, black, margins grayish white, membranous; Branches whorled, medium solid, ribbed 3-4, simple or rebranched. The spore stems are early spring, often purplish-brown, fleshy, unbranched, with long and large sheaths. Sporangium spicule 5-6 months, terminal, blunt, 2-3.5cm long; Sporophyll hexagonal, peltate, spirally arranged, with growth sporangium bordering. The spores are in one shape.
